The Complete Guide to Functional Mushrooms
If you've started noticing "functional mushroom" everywhere — in cacao, in coffee, in capsules — but aren't quite sure what it actually means, this guide is the place to start. No jargon, no overclaiming, just a clear walk through what these mushrooms are and how they're traditionally used.
What "functional mushroom" actually means
"Functional mushroom" is a category term for mushroom species used specifically for their bioactive compounds — most notably beta-glucans and other polysaccharides — rather than as food in the culinary sense. You won't find them sautéed in a pan; you'll find them as extracts, blended into cacao, matcha, coffee, or taken as capsules.
They're distinct from culinary mushrooms (like button or shiitake, though shiitake does have functional uses too) in that the whole point is the concentrated extract, not the eating experience.
Fruiting body vs. mycelium: the detail that actually matters
This is the single most important thing to understand when buying any functional mushroom product.
Fruiting body is the mushroom itself — the part you'd recognize as a mushroom, harvested and extracted for its bioactive compounds.
Mycelium is the root-like network the mushroom grows from, often grown on grain. Mycelium-on-grain products can be significantly diluted with starch from the grain substrate, meaning you may be getting far less actual mushroom compound than the label suggests.
At Soma, every mushroom extract we use is 100% fruiting body — no mycelium fillers, no grain starch. It's a more expensive way to source, but it means what's on the label is actually what's in the cup.
The core functional mushrooms, one at a time
Lion's Mane
Traditionally associated with cognitive clarity and focus. Widely discussed in relation to nerve growth factor (NGF) pathways. Mild in flavor, easy to blend into both sweet and savory contexts. The mushroom in Cacao ✹ and Matcha ✹. → [Read the full Lion's Mane guide]
Cordyceps
Known historically as the "energy mushroom" — traditionally used to support stamina and vitality, without the sharp spike of caffeine. Neutral in flavor. Found in Cacao ✹ alongside lion's mane. → [Read the full Cordyceps guide]
Reishi
Sometimes called the "mushroom of calm." Traditionally used to support relaxation and restoration, particularly in evening contexts. Found in Cacao ☾.
Chaga
Traditionally associated with immune support, largely linked to its beta-glucan content. Earthy, slightly bitter on its own — softened significantly when blended into a spiced cacao base. Found alongside reishi in Cacao ☾.
How extraction ratios work (and why they're on our labels)
You'll often see a ratio like "15:1" on a functional mushroom product. This describes how many kilograms of raw mushroom material were used to produce one kilogram of finished extract — a 15:1 extract means 15kg of mushroom went into making 1kg of extract, concentrating the bioactive compounds significantly. Higher ratios generally mean a more concentrated, potent extract, though it's not the only variable that matters (fruiting body vs. mycelium source matters just as much).
What functional mushrooms are not
They're not a replacement for sleep, movement, or medical care. They're not fast-acting in the way caffeine is — most traditional and modern use emphasizes consistent, repeated intake over time rather than a single dose producing an immediate effect. And they're not interchangeable — each one is traditionally associated with a different kind of support, which is why Soma blends specific mushrooms for specific moments (energy and focus in the morning, calm and immunity in the evening) rather than using one generic "mushroom blend" for everything.
Starting your own ritual
If you're new to functional mushrooms, the easiest entry point is usually through something you're already drinking — cacao or matcha — rather than a standalone capsule. It removes the "new supplement" friction and lets the mushroom become part of a moment you already have, rather than one more thing to remember.
