A glass of fig hojicha latte next to a Soma Hojicha pouch and a fresh fig

Fig Hojicha Latte: A Roasted Autumn Recipe

Late figs, warm oat milk and a roasted cup. This is the latte we made with Notus oat drink for our Instagram reel, written out step by step so you can make it at home. It takes about ten minutes and makes one tall glass.

What you'll need

  • 3 ripe figs
  • 250 ml warm oat milk (we used Notus oat drink)
  • 2 tsp Hojicha
  • 50 ml water at 80–90 °C

You'll also need a blender or stick blender, a small bamboo chasen whisk or milk frother, and a tall glass.

Method

  1. Warm the milk. Heat the oat milk until hot to the touch, not boiling.
  2. Blend the figs. Blend two of the figs with the warm milk until smooth. For a silkier texture, pour it through a fine sieve.
  3. Whisk the hojicha. Whisk 2 tsp of hojicha with the 50 ml of water at 80–90 °C until smooth, with no clumps.
  4. Slice the third fig and place the slices in the bottom of your glass.
  5. Pour the fig milk over the sliced fig.
  6. Top with the hojicha and watch it settle into the milk.

Why this pairing works

Hojicha is green tea leaf, roasted until the grassy notes turn toasty, nutty and almost caramel. Ripe figs add a jammy sweetness, and oat milk rounds it all off. It is also lower in caffeine than matcha, which is why we reach for it in the afternoon. If you're new to hojicha, start with Hojicha 101, or read Matcha vs. Hojicha to see how the two compare.

Small tips

  • Use properly ripe figs. They should give slightly when pressed. If yours are still firm, add a small drizzle of maple syrup to the blender.
  • Make it iced. Whisk the hojicha with a splash of warm water first, then pour it over cold fig milk and ice.
  • No whisk? A small milk frother works well for the hojicha.
  • Keep the hojicha smooth. Make the paste with a little of the water first, then add the rest.
